Lot 43

1794 S-72 R2 Exact Head of 1795 PCGS "Genuine, AU Details, Cleaning". Frosty steel and light olive. The color is attractive and appears natural in spite of the PCGS assessment. But there is a chance it was lightly cleaned long ago and has retoned naturally over the decades. The only marks are a thin diagonal nick close above the eye and a faint planchet lamination line that meanders through the cap down to the dentils left of the middle curls (as struck). E-MDS, Breen state II, with a fine die crack from the left top of the Y down to the right foot of the adjacent T and on to the browlock and hair. The reverse is uncracked. A nice example of the "Exact Head of 1794" variety. Graded EF40 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, photo #39035. Bland says EF40 and tied for CC#6 in the Bland/Breen census. Our grade is EF40+, close to EF45. The attribution and Paul Gerrie provenance are shown on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value $7,500-UP.
