Lot 367

1807 S-271 R1 "Comet Obverse" VF20. Double Struck over Obverse Brockage with 2 Dates. Sharpness VF35 or better but a bit dull from extremely fine roughness that covers the planchet. No noticeable verdigris, and the only mark is a short v-shaped scratch on the upper part of the neck. Somewhat frosty dark olive brown and steel. EDS, Breen state II. The die clashmarks on the obverse are sharp but the "Comet" flaw behind the head has not formed. This cent was double struck. The first impression was an obverse brockage with both sides reasonably well centered on the planchet. The incuse impression is rotated perhaps 10-15 degrees relative to the normal one. The second strike was against a new blank planchet positioned about 20% off center to K-11 on the obverse while the reverse was struck by the reverse die. The uneven pressure created by the off-center planchet being pressed against the obverse during the second strike caused the top of the reverse to be very softly struck by the reverse die, and this left behind strong evidence of the obverse brockage. The entire incuse "1807" is obvious at the top of the reverse with much of the incuse bust and lowest curls remaining clear as well. A great mint error, and the error is obvious at arm's length.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
