Lot 33

1794 S-57 R1. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown. CAC Approved. Choice lustrous frosty light bluish steel brown with underlying faded mint red showing on both sides, mostly on the reverse. The satiny mint luster covers the entire planchet, even on the highpoints. This is a gem cent except for some tiny planchet flakes at LIBE and a larger one in the field just over the end of the pole (all as struck). The only contact marks are a microscopic tick under the earlobe and a small nick on the leaf over the O in ONE. M-LDS, Breen state IV, with two shallow linear depressions in the field before the face (Breen called them "trenches"), each with a fine die crack running along the depression. Graded MS65 Choice by Noyes and tied with one other piece for finest known, his photo #29573. Graded MS63 and tied for CC#2 honors behind a slightly finer example that has a planchet flaw in the Breen/Bland census. Our grade is MS64. A truly great cent, carefully saved for us by a visitor from England who took home a small group of shiny new souvenirs from his trip across the pond. The attribution and Paul Gerrie provenance are shown on the PCGS label. Pop 1; the Finest and only Mint State example graded at PCGS .
Estimated Value $50,000-UP.
