1794 S-51 R5-. PCGS graded AU-55. CAC Approved. Frosty reddish steel brown and chocolate with darker steel toning on the highest points of the portrait plus some more at LI in LIBERTY. Has some claims to a slightly higher grade but there are a few light nicks on the cheek and shoulder plus a couple faint hairline scratches on the neck, none distracting. E-MDS, Breen state I, before the obverse die cracked. Called EF45 and tied for CC#1 with a single unconfirmed example in the Noyes and Bland census lists, Noyes photo #21375. This is the Breen plate coin for the variety and it is plated for the same purpose in the 1991 Noyes book on the early large cents. The obverse is plated to illustrate the EF45 grade in the Tom Morley grading book for 1794 cents. Our grade is EF45 as well. The attribution and Paul Gerrie provenance are shown on the PCGS label. Pop 2; none finer at PCGS. Tied for the Finest graded by the service.
