Lot 27

1794 S-43 R2+. PCGS graded AU-55. Attractive lustrous chocolate and steel brown. Perfectly centered and nicely struck except for minor weakness at the tops of ES-OF. There is a spot of slightly darker toning at the end of the pole and another area of similar toning at BE in LIBERTY. A thin nearly horizontal nick above the N in ONE is a good identifying mark, but it is trivial. MDS, Breen state III. The die cracks through the U in UNITED and 17 in the date are clear, but the crack through U does not reach the C in CENT. Graded EF45 Choice and tied for CC#6 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #24132. Bland also says EF45 and tied for CC#7 in the Bland/Breen census. Our grade is EF40+, very close to EF45. A beautiful cent and it comes with a very nice provenance, including Homer Downing, who characteristically added his initials (HD) in white ink on the edge. The attribution and Paul Gerrie provenance are shown on the PCGS label. Pop 2; 1 finer in 58.
Estimated Value $7,500-UP.
