Lot 140

1795 C-5b R4 Thick Planchet VG10. Five points sharper but covered with very fine roughness, strongest on the reverse. Rather glossy reddish chocolate brown with lighter brown toning covering the devices. The two-tone look accents the designs and adds to the eye appeal. No verdigris. The only mark is a tiny rim nick at the B in LIBERTY. Nicely struck. The date is weak (as usual on the thick planchet version) but it is complete and easily readable. The legends are complete in spite of a few weak letters on the reverse. Struck on a planchet cut from a spoiled large cent. Weight 112.6 grains (versus the 84.0-grain standard for the normal thin-planchet version).
Estimated Value $600-UP.

Realized $1,725
