Lot 1424

1873-CC PCGS graded Genuine, holed and plugged. Our grade is Sharpness of XF. A popular key date. The 1873-CC is second only to the famous 1870-S in rarity among regular issue With Motto Seated dollars, 1866-73. Although it does not earn the lowest mintage of the Carson City dollars (that distinction belongs to the 1871-CC), the number of survivors is lower than any other CC date. Only 2,300 pieces were struck of the 1873-CC, and it is very likely that the many (most?) were melted, with possibly 750 and 1,000 pieces put into circulation. The reason for the low mintage was clear: the mints were preparing to strike the replacement Trade dollar, which was also first minted in 1873 (PCGS # 6972) .
Estimated Value $6,500 - 7,000.
