A exceptional example of this medal that marks the centennial of Zebulon Pike's Southwest Expedition, and the discovery of the mountain that now bears his name. Designed by C.E. Barber and struck at Philadelphia Mint. Brilliant surfaces with deeply mirrored fields, and frosty devices. Light smokey toning at lower edge on obverse and reverse. Only 250 proofs are known to have been struck, and it is believed that there are less than 75 surviving specimens. NGC census shows 31 graded, with Proof-65 Cameo being the finest.
