Lot 1069

Shillelagh Walking Stick and Cudgel. Made from blackthorn wood, 29 in. long. It typically takes three years to complete. Associated with Ireland, the use of these clubs by the warriors of Shillelagh during the first millennium led to their becoming synonymous with the stick. Under William III (reigned over England, Scotland and Ireland 1689-1702), Irish Catholics were subject to a series of repressive laws, one of which made it illegal for them to carry a weapon. This club, which appeared as a walking stick, served as an effective weapon. The shillelagh was used by Irish Americans as both a weapon and a good luck charm. The term "shillelagh" has come to refer to a weighted fighting stick.
Estimated Value $300 - 500.

Realized $192
