Lot 1558

1858-D. NGC AU Details, repaired. Attractive golden toning and to the naked eye, looks quite nice. Only 15,362 minted of which merely 165 examples are estimated to have survived. The Braided Hair, Coronet, or Liberty Head motif $5, featured a small head of Liberty with her hair styled compactly, tied at the back with a string of beads. She wears a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. Stars surround the border, and the date is below. The Liberty Head motif by Gobrecht underwent several transitions, and a study of the various forms as used on cents of 1839 (in particular) and $10 gold coins of 1838-9 can be quite fascinating. The most desirable branch mints in this series are (in no particular order) Dahlonega "D", Charlotte "C", and Carson City "CC." (PCGS # 8278) .
Estimated Value $850 - 900.
The William H & Beuelaress K. Helem Collection.

Realized $2,128
