1888. NGC graded Proof 64 Ultra Cameo. A glittering golden beauty, mostly untoned. Only 291 Proofs struck. Frosty honey gold motifs stand boldly out from deeply mirrored fields. A blazing Proof which is almost in the Gem class, and a bold one struck in the penultimate ("second to the last) year this denomination was made, 1888. The known population of collectors in that era was small but there was active speculation in Proofs in the 1880s, mainly in the $1 and $3 denominations, which accounts for the advanced Proof mintage figures. We suspect that perhaps a few score or so exist -- with the present beauty well up in the rankings where quality and eye appeal are concerned. Pop 1; none finer.
