1842-O. In a PCGS Genuine holder, coded 94 (altered surfaces) As described in our sale of the A. Bernard Shore Collection:
"Unique Presentation Piece 1842-O Eagle.
1842-O Presentation Strike 64. The Finest Known example of this date and a piece which appears to have received special care upon striking. The details are almost medallic in appearance with every detail up and bold. The border beads are more broad than on any other example we have seen and the shape of the reeding is entirely different as well; on this coin the space between each reed is less than on a 'regular' issue and each reed appears higher and somewhat squarer. In addition, there are strong raised die lines in stars 2 and 3. The fourth star is sharply recut and thee are die lines from star thirteen to below the numeral 2 in the date. Unfortunately, this coin was lightly cleaned sometime ago; this has slightly dulled the surfaces but it is still obvious that they have full mirror reflectiveness and a texture which is unlike that found on any business strike. It is not known why this coin was struck. It is known, however, that at least one Proof 1884-O Half Eagle and Eagle is now in a famous Texas collection while the Eagle is untraced. This cataloguer has seen the Proof 1884-O Half Eagle and the presently offered piece compares favorably in terms of appearance. We recommend that prospective bidders examine this coin in person; if only to further their numismatic education. This is the most important coin in the sale one of the most important Eagles we have ever sold."
This specimen is also mentioned in Jeff Garret and Ron Guth's Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins 1795-1933. …"Doug Winter cited an unusually well-struck 1842-O eagle from a 1988 sale (Bernard Shore) as a possible presentation piece."
This is the above mentioned coin but has been further cleaned. Identified by a spot above the 4 in the date which was darker and the overall color of the coin was somewhat toned when we sold it in 1988 (PCGS # 8587) .
