Lot 355

1849 N-10 R3 MS60+. Lustrous bluish steel brown with traces of mint red in protected areas, mostly on the obverse. The fields are satiny and lustrous. Defects include a tiny speck of carbon in the field close over star 2, a short hairline scratch on the bust over the 8, and a light nick on the forehead. Excellent eye appeal. LDS, die state d, with the obverse heavily lapped to remove die rust, although some roughness remains in the field at stars 3-9. The lump on the coronet is larger and extends nearly to below the left point of star 6, the digits of the date are thin thanks to the heavy lapping, and several tiny rim cud breaks show on both sides, strongest at stars 12 & 13. Lapping to the reverse die added a die line at T in UNITED. A scarce die state that offers a distinctly different appearance than the earlier or rusted states of these dies. Very nice for the grade. Tied for CC#2 with only 4 known in any mint state grade. DWH #2126.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
