1848 Small Date Rarity-7 VG8. Sharpness near F12 with a small rim cut over the second T in STATES, fine carbon on the right top of the T in CENT, and microscopic roughness in the reverse fields. Otherwise the planchet and surfaces are nice, especially on the obverse. Glossy medium brown, the reverse a couple shades darker than the obverse. Struck 10% off-center to K-7.5 on an off-center 1848 Federal cent. An undertype 848 is clearly visible at stars 11-13. The first 8 shows in the dentils right of star 13, the 4 is under the left side of star 12, and the second 8 is in the field between stars 11 & 12. Dentils from the host strike show between stars 10 & 11. While a few examples of the 10 confirmed 1848 Small Date cents were struck on host Petite Head cents (1840-43), this is the first example reported struck over a Mature Head cent. Weight 171.4 grains. DWH #1794.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.
