Lot 3025

Britain. Celtic Coinage, Trinovantes. Cunobeline, c. AD 10-20. Gold Stater (5.32 g) minted at Camulodunum (today's Colchester). Ear of grain. Reverse: Celticized horse right; above, branch. Van Arsdell 1931. Fine.

Sometimes, standard numismatic references disagree on terminology, dating and other parameters; which does a cataloguer choose? Here, "gold" is stated in a general manner, as the purity of gold in the Celtic series ranges from about 72% purity (.720 fineness) for imported Gallic staters to later British tribal coinage averaging less than 40% gold. For Celtic coinage, then, we use "gold" to indicate a plethora of gold alloys, whether they be yellow or red in color from their additives.
Estimated Value $400 - 450.

Realized $518
