Lot 127

1846 N-3 R2 Repunched Date MS62+. Frosty light bluish steel brown with 15% of the red remaining on the obverse, 30% on the reverse. Very close to MS63 but there is a light contact mark in the field behind the portrait and a faint nick in the hair under star 7. The surfaces are lustrous and quite attractive, and this cent offers outstanding eye appeal for the grade. Rare terminal die state, die state h, with rim cuds over TATES-OF-AM, and these cuds are bold. The repunching at the left end of the crossbar of the 4 remains visible. Finest of only 13 known in the terminal state. This is the Grellman plate coin for the die state in the 2001 edition of his book on the series. DWH #3330.
Estimated Value $500-UP.
Ex McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 9/99:538-Jim Roecker, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldberg’s 2/11/07:816.
