Lot 1188

1914-S. ICG graded MS-65 Red. Lots of mint red and well struck. The rarity of the '14-S date in uncirculated condition was known early on, and the 1935 Standard Catalog valued it and the 1914-D equally as the most expensive coins in the series, give that a thought. This book, however, was directed toward the serious collector who acquired his coins from dealers. As the collecting of coins from circulation became widespread in subsequent years, issues such as 1909-S V.D.B., common in Mint State but rarely seen in circulation, came to overshadow the importance of the condition rarities such as 1914-S and 1926-S.

It doesn't get much nicer than this as far as extant 1914-S mint red Lincoln Cents are concerned. This beautiful specimen is sharp for a product of the San Francisco Mint, both sides are struck with all the fine detailing showing on all elements of the design. The color is a brilliant coppery red shade. Fully deserving of the RD designation, the surfaces are equally well described by the MS65 numeric grade. Only a single slight mark on the beard. Fields are pristine.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 2,800.
