Lot 1170

1909-S. VDB. PCGS graded MS-65 Red PQ. Full mint red and quite choice. A popular key date. Although the 1909-S V.D.B. Cent has the lowest mintage in the series, and has always been regarded as the key to the series, a fair number were set aside due to the change in designs that year. Still, when encountered the 1909-S V.D.B. Cents are usually in well worn grades, and often corroded. High grade, full Red specimens are under great demand from collectors of this popular series. This highly lustrous Gem features reddish-gold centers, bordered by more coppery golden color near the rims. Everything is fully original. The strike is decidedly above average, and free from surface imperfections, such as a mint-made planchet flaw or later spotting. As usual for business strikes for this important issue, devices are well struck throughout, unlike later S-mint Cents in the 1910s and 1920s, which feature weakness in the wheat ears for instance. In fact, the present Gem BU marks a rare appearance of this date in full red Mint State (PCGS # 2428) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.
The Dr. Charles Richman Collection.
