Lot 672

1797 C-3b R4 Low Head with Lettered Edge VG10. Sharpness VF25 but lightly corroded and the obverse has been smoothed, mostly in the field before the portrait. There are a few shallow pitmarks on both sides, the largest of these at the left top of the O in OF. The rims also display some small disturbances, but many of those are caused by the edge letters which hang off the planchet (the edge letters were designed for a thicker planchet and are too tall for the thin planchets used for this variety). The planchet is not perfectly round, which is often the case since the planchets for this variety were cut from spoiled large cents rather than rolled planchet stock. Nicely retoned glossy dark chocolate and olive brown. The date and legends are complete and clear, and the edge letters are strong. Far from perfect but not bad for the tough lettered edge sub-variety. Weight 79.2 grains.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.
