United States, 1935, "Explorer II" Balloon Flight Event Covers. Lot of two different including a cover with a Rapid City, S. Dak(ota) July 11, 1935 machine cancel and a blue printed "U.S. Army & National Geographic Stratosphere Flight" cachet. The other cover has a November 11, 1935 cancel (one day after the flight) and a faint White Lake, S. Dak(ota) hand cancel. This cover was flown on the balloon chase plane (typed cachet) and is signed by the pilot. The cachet reads: "Carried in Army Transport airplane #31-400 following Stratosphere Balloon from Stratobowl in the Black Hills. Ascended at daybreak. Landed at 4:30 PM. C. S. T." An important pair of covers.
