Santa Anna, Antonio Lopez de (1794-1876) Mexican general of Alamo fame; seven time Mexican president. Military promotion document Signed "Ant. Lopez de Santa Anna," followed by a paraph, on "Egercito Libertador" stationery, one page plus blank integral leaf, Puebla, December 26, 1832. Raising Infantry Captain Mariano Quijano to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Folio sheet folded to 11½ x 8 in. Signed on the first page with additional text on pg. 2. Excellent condition.

After Texas declared independence on March 2, 1836, Santa Anna moved north. On March 6th at the Battle of the Alamo, Santa Anna's army killed several hundred Texan defenders and three weeks later executed over 300 prisoners at the "Goliad Massacre." His forces were defeated at the Battle of San Jacinto and he was captured on April 22, later being returned to Mexico by terms of the Treaties of Velasco. After a turbulent military and political life including seven terms as president, he spent years in exile, some in the USA, returning to Mexico in 1874. He died in obscurity in Mexico City on June 21, 1876.
