Lot 2674

1924-S $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-63. Nice and frosty with lovely natural golden mint bloom colors. Has two small marks near the elbow of the branch hand. Lustrous eagle with some orange-gold toning above, across, and below. The 1924-S is a double eagle rarity. At one time it was believed to be among the rarest dates in the series, handily outclassing the MCMVII Ultra High Relief and the Proofs of 1883 and 1884. The arrival of a specimen at auction was a big occasion. Today, following the release of hoards abroad, the 1924-S continues to be elusive, but ample numbers exist that they come on the market with regularity, usually in lower Mint State grades. Pop 143 (PCGS # 9179) .
Estimated Value $8,500 - 9,500.
