Lot 2642

1923 $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-64. Enchanting golden orange shades coupled with intense mint bloom, makes this a desirable example. A couple of minor copper spots exist.

For trivia buffs: What was the buying power of a $20 gold piece back in 1923? For starters, the daily pay for a Ford factory assemblyline worker, who did not require a high school diploma -- and tax-free, remember -- was $5 a day. A new Chevrolet roadster, 2 passenger, cost $570.00 in 1923; a "G-E Whiz," desk fan, $10.00; American light porcelain dinnerware, 52 pieces, $19.95; a gas range for the kitchen, $77.00; and a White Mountain brand refrigerator, $49.50. Oh, and for those with a constipated constitution: California prunes, 2 lbs for 24¢ (PCGS # 9175) .
Estimated Value $1,650 - 1,700.

Realized $2,013
