Lot 2361

1873-CC $20 Liberty. NGC graded AU-53. Well struck and toned. Only 22,410 pieces struck and a prize in lovely About Uncirculated condition as offered in this Lot. To put it mildly, this is a nicely struck example of the rare Carson City Mint $20 of this year, a specimen that exhibits lovely untouched patina and has evidence of luster within, on top of, and around the major devices. In days gone by, $20 gold pieces weren't collected as numismatic items but they were used as bullion for payment of goods and services rendered or due, and were a major export item in payment for goods purchased across the ocean. Some strange happenstance allowed this attractive coin to remain with collectors, rather than being consigned to the melting pots as was the fate of many gold coins that became worn in use. Recall that gold coins were not collected by mintmark until the 20th century; the few numismatists who could afford them chose to buy Proof strikes from the Mint each year instead. Pop 64 (PCGS # 8968) .
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.
