1889-CC Morgan Dollar. NGC graded MS-61. Untoned. A popular key date, one of only 350,000 minted. Silver dollar issuance terminated in 1885 but began again in 1889 at the Carson City office creating a three-year hiatus when there were no CC dollars made. Some point to a few irregularities that had popped up which caused the Treasury Department to close the Mint while an inquiry was made. Others to the installation of a Democratic administration overseen by Grover Cleveland whose budget-cutting included the Carson mint. In 1885, Cleveland entered office. In 1885, the Democrat-led administration cut funding to the Carson Mint. In 1889, Cleveland left office. In 1889, a Republican administration returned to power. In 1889, the Mint received new funding. Coincidence? Upon reopening, there was only time to strike 350,000 silver dollars before the next calendar year began, as mentioned above. Hence, this date's infrequent appearance at auction, especially in Mint State condition.

The '89-CC is always included among the top five key dates in the series in Mint condition. It is the undisputed leader among Uncirculated Carson City Morgan dollars. This attractive MS61 coin is nicely brilliant, without toning, and has a characteristic slightly reflective sheen in the fields. The strike full on the obverse while the breast feathers of the eagle are sharp, both encouragements for a collector looking to bid. The obverse has a few wispy, well scattered hairlines and marks in the field but nothing out of the ordinary, with almost no disturbance on the reverse (PCGS # 7190) .
Estimated Value $12,000 - 13,000.
