Lot 1124

1912 Barber Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 68. Intense rainbow toning on both sides. Only 700 Proofs issued. The majority of 1912 Proofs were handled as if by a wrecking crew going to work on a demolition site, and there seems to be little doubt that some of the coins may actually have been spent. These factors weigh on the surviving census, therefore, with few high quality coins left today. The surfaces of the Proof 68 on offer are nearly close to perfect. "Impressive" seems to be too weak a work to describe them. We would love to fill pages with descriptive adjectives about the coin, but won't. Briefly, the coin verges on Cameo Proof quality, as seen by the light satiny surface on the main devices. Toning is as expected with rich, deep, and thoroughly enjoyable shades. We expect that the successful bidder will let out an inner shout of joy when it is awarded (and if the people in the room sitting nearby lean over and listen closely, some of his elation may escape from his mouth, ears and nose in a snort of delight.) The question is: Who will be that successful bidder? Pop 6; none finer at NGC.
Estimated Value $11,000 - 13,000.
