Brazil 80 Reis overstruck on an 1820/19 Newcomb-1 Large Cent. Glossy chocolate brown. The Brazil dies were used to produce the larger 80 Reis pieces in 1823-1831, and the peripheral legends are off the cent planchet. There is enough of the cent undertype visible, including the date, to attribute it to the 1820/19 Newcomb-1 overdate variety (not that it really matters). Why this was done is a mystery, but I suspect a mint worker in Brazil had a bit too much time on his hands and a US Large Cent in his pocket, and we see the product of his whimsy. Regardless, this piece makes a fitting end to the sale of the superb middle date cent collection of Mr. R. E. Naftzger, Jr., and this sale will quickly become an important piece of numismatic history. PCGS Population 1; 1 finer in 53.
Estimated Value $500-UP.
Ex Tony Terranova 12/17/81.
