Lot 461

1839 N-9 R2 PCGS graded MS65RB. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. Silly Head. Lustrous bright mint red fading to steel brown on the highpoints, 85% of the original color remaining on the obverse, 95% on the reverse. The only defects are traces of an old fingerprint on the left half of the obverse and under CE in CENT. Great eye appeal in spite of the fingerprints as the mint color just jumps off the coin. MDS. The die cracks are a bit stronger and the fields are covered with fine radial die flowlines that contribute to the attractive cartwheel luster. Called MS70- and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS63 and tied for CC#3, his photo #21075. Our grade is MS66. PCGS Population 1; none finer.
Estimated Value $5,000-UP.
Ex William Festus Morgan, J. C. Morgenthau 6/16/32:309-Milton A. Holmes, Stack's 10/5/60:1593 (as "N-4")-C. Douglas Smith-Jerry A. Bobbe 6/14/82.
