Lot 451

1839 N-5 R2 PCGS graded MS66BN. PCGS graded MS-66 Brown. Booby Head. Choice, highly lustrous medium chocolate and steel brown with very faded underlying mint color showing through in the obverse fields. Great eye appeal. The surfaces are satiny and nearly perfect. The only marks, and they are trivial, are microscopic planchet flakes around the date (as struck), a light diagonal nick left of star 7, and faint traces of an old fingerprint at RIC in AMERICA. Nicely struck MDS with fine radial die flowlines covering the fields and full radial lines in all the stars. Called MS63 and tied for CC#4 in one place in the Noyes census, MS65 and tied for CC#2 in another, his photo #20712. Bland says MS60+ and tied for CC#6. Our grade is MS65. PCGS Population 2; none finer.
Estimated Value $4,000-UP.
Ex Herbert Tobias (possibly from the 1957 ANA Sale, Federal Coin Exchange, 8/21/57:220) 12/57-Manuel Taylor 10/60.
