Lot 359

1837 N-1 R3 PCGS graded MS65RB. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. Plain Hair Cord with Medium Letters. Lustrous bright original mint red mellowing to light steel brown on the highpoints, 80% of the red remaining. A small spot of dark chocolate toning left of star 2, a small planchet chip on the jaw right of the lower lip, and a small spot of dark toning at the dentils below the wreath ribbon are the only marks on an otherwise pristine cent. E-MDS with satiny mint frost covering the fields thanks to microscopic die flowlines but many of the fine die polishing lines at the E in ONE found on the earliest state of the reverse die are still visible. Called MS70- and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS65 and CC#1, his photo #21600. Our grade is MS65+. PCGS Population 1; none finer.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.
Ex Howard R. Newcomb, J. C. Morgenthau 5/16/45:679-Floyd T. Starr, Stack's 6/13/84:328.
