Lot 252

1831 N-4 R3 EF45. EF-45. Small Letters Reverse. Sharpness near mint state but there is a small arc of microscopic reddish verdigris at the lower half of the 31 in the date and a few microscopic specks of similar verdigris on the reverse at ES-OF-AM. None of the verdigris is deep or visible without the aid of a glass. The only contact marks are a pair of faint hairline scratches at CE in CENT. Lustrous steel brown and light chocolate with reddish chocolate toning covering the right third of the reverse (which is the only significant distraction on this cent). Traces of faded mint color show in protected areas around stars 1-4. EDS, before any die cracks on the obverse. Called AU55 and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 net EF40 and tied for CC#5, his photo #21260. Our grade is EF45.
Estimated Value $500-UP.
Ex Sam Koeppel 2/23/46.
