Lot 278

1811 C-1 R5 4-Star Cud. EF-40. Sharper by 5 points with traces of extremely faint roughness on both sides, mostly confined to the highpoints and devices. No verdigris or contact marks, and the roughness is so faint it is difficult to see even with a glass. The only mark is a dull depression in the planchet right of the bottom of the D in UNITED, probably from a pre-striking planchet void that didn't strike out since it was opposite the big cud on the obverse. Frosty olive and chocolate, darker on the highpoints and lighter in the fields and protected areas. Terminal die state, Manley state 5.0, with a large cud break at stars 1-4. The is the Manley plate coin for the die state and one of the finest known with the 4-star cud.
Estimated Value $8,000 - 10,000.
Ex Jim McGuigan 7/10/84-Jules Reiver, Heritage 1/24/06:19039-Jim McGuigan, Tony Terranova, and Chris McCawley-Michael Spurlock.
