Hadrian, A.D. 117-138. AE Sestertius, Rome mint, struck A.D. 134-138. Laureate and draped bust right of Hadrian. Reverse: Emperor and Judaea standing at altar; two boys holding palms on either side of Judaea; victim at base of altar. RIC 890 [as Rare]. Cf. BMC 1655. Extremely Rare. Choice Very Fine.

In order to create a stronger and more cohesive empire, the emperor Hadrain personally visited his far-flung territories, and placed personifications on the reverses of many of his coins. Some of the rarest portray Judaea and were struck around the time of the Bar Kokhba War.
