Lot 1600

1873. Open 3. Double Die Obverse FS-101. PCGS graded MS-61. Nice and frosty. Fully pulsating with lovely bright-gold color, the surfaces are free of bothersome striking incompleteness. After the first issues of 1873 were deemed questionable because the 3 in the date looked too close to an 8, the mint revised its numeral punch and created a new set of working dies for all three mints that struck this denomination in 1873. So-called Open 3 coins are the workhorse issue of the year. Neither scarce nor common compared to say the 1904 Philly Mint $20 production, a frosty Mint State like the present example should find eager buyers. Pop 1; 2 finer in 62. Only 3 examples graded at PCGS for the variety.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.

Realized $2,645
