Lot 1599

1872-CC $20 Liberty. NGC graded AU-53. Plenty of luster remains to justify this high grade. A scarcer "CC" Double Eagle as only 26,900 were minted. Gold specialists who desire an early-dated gold coin from Carson City for their collections would presumably gravitate toward the commoner 1874-CC, 1875-CC or 1876-CC double eagle deliveries. Even though this issue is considerably more plentiful than its 1870 and 1871 counterparts the '72-CC still commands a great deal of attention. Lightly worn and moderately abraded, as are most in this near-Mint condition, with the fields and devices still evidencing some frosty luster here and there, again, solidifying the grade. The strike is bold and all features are adequately defined (PCGS # 8964) .
Estimated Value $7,500 - 8,500.

Realized $8,338
