Lot 4824

1907 $20 St. Gaudens. High relief, wire rim. NGC graded Proof 64. In NGC holder 1854501-010. A untoned example. One of the most desirable coins ever struck by the U.S. government this Choice Proof displays rich smooth gold luster throughout and near superlative surfaces. The strike is most unusual on the High Relief twenties since it required upwards of 5 blows from the dies to create the entire design. We know that these were coined on the largest hydraulic press the Mint had available, using maximum settings to bring up the relief cut into the dies. As seen here, the standing figures of Liberty seems to jump right off the surface. On the reverse, an eagle soars against a curved ("convex") field of precious golden yellow. There are two small tick marks at Liberty's knees, rendering this one point shy of Gem class, but in all other ways it is outstanding and, as the saying goes, a cut above the rest. Pop 33; 34 finer. (PCGS # 9135) .
Estimated Value $40,000 - 45,000.
