Lot 4669

1849-C $5 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-61. PCGS holder 12805158. Only 64,823 pieces minted. Unusually well struck on a problem-free planchet. Struck in natural light greenish-yellow gold. Certified as MS-61 by PCGS, this stands as one of the few known Mint State examples of the scarce 1849-C issue. Glowing with honest luster, it compares favorably in its amount of eye appeal with a coin a point or two higher on the grading scale. Beyond that, in the crowded theater of rare C and D mint gold of which soft strikes abound, the details are well struck, including the coronet and hair of Liberty and the eagle's feathers including those at the neck, all contributing to its superior status on a Liberty $5 gold piece from Charlotte Mint. The fields are lustrous and free of all but the most minute abrasions. We find not a single feature to have to point to in the way of a problem. Pop 4; 6 finer, 3 in 62, 1 in 63, 2 in 64 (PCGS # 8241) .
Estimated Value $8,500 - 9,500.
