Lot 4662

1840-D $5 Liberty. Tall D. NGC graded MS-61. A well struck example shimmering with frosty mint luster. Some scattered light marks, none too serious. Light golden-yellow color. The 1840-D half eagle is the first branch mint half eagle from Dahlonega with the D mintmark on the reverse. It would remain in this location until the end of the Liberty half eagle series (1908). 1840-D is a key coin for its rarity as well as judged in an historical light. The surfaces display even satin luster that is found on the few high grade survivors. Sharp details are also convincing, without even a sign of the later soft, mushiness that would form the bulk of the commoner 1850's-decade pieces from this mint. Abrasions are also held to a minimum, while eye appeal eclipses a more typical specimen. Attractive in all ways. Only 22,896 coins struck. Pop 5; 5 finer, 4 in 62, 1 in 63 (PCGS # 8198) .
Estimated Value $14,000 - 15,000.
