Lot 4658

1807 $5 Capped Draped Bust. Bust left. . BD-8, Breen-6453, Miller-101. PCGS graded MS-62. CAC Approved. Nicely toned. Well preserved with smooth, velvety golden luster and original orange-gold shades. This is a strongly struck example, with nice detail to all the important high points. In fact, the eagle's neck and shield detail compares favorably with some in much higher grades. This area of John Reich's design tended to lie opposite the high cap folds on Liberty and so often resulted in weak strikes. But not so here, the coin is outstanding in all areas. A gleaming fresh 1807 Capped Bust Left half eagle. The reverse die that struck the coin was later combined with two overdated and one normal obverse in 1808. Pop 43; 72 finer (PCGS # 8101) .

Historic note: Although the estimated mintage in 1807 is greater than 50,000 half eagles, it has been understood for a long while that perhaps as few as 3% of the original number exist in collections today. By far, most were exported or subsequently melted.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 17,000.

Realized $21,850
