Lot 2176

German States - Hesse-Cassel. Taler, 1637-GK. Dav-A6764; Schütz-914; KM-162.7; Hoffm.6146. Mintmaster, GK (Georg Kruckenberger, 1637-1640). Wilhelm V, 1627-1637. Lion with date divided in field, mintmark GK, side of lion's legs. Reverse Tree in storm, sun above with Hebrew "JEHOVAH". Toned. NGC graded EF-40.

This is the toughest year to complete for Hoffmeister lists 67 different Weidenbaumtalers. There is of course a very interesting feature that this coin possesses. Only ten talers in the entire Weidenbaum series for all the years of the series have the spelling error "WILLHELM" rather than the correct spelling "WILHELM" (one "L" rather than two "L's"). This coin is one of the ten coins with the spelling error. If not rare, certainly an interesting feature.
Estimated Value $900 - 1,000.
David Cassel Collection.
