Lot 571

German States -- Brandenburg-Ansbach. Taler, 1727. Dav-1977; Bernh-229; KM-159. Christine Charlotte, Regent. Bust left, date below. Reverse: Crowned arms of Brandenburg and Wurttemberg-Oels, below "V." for Vestner, diecutter in Nuremberg. Spectacular iridescent tones of blue, violet and grays. Rare. NGC graded AU-58.

It was a common occurence in Europe to have a young child succeed to a throne and have a regent administer the territory. In some cases the state produced coins with the child's likeness (France of Louis XIV and XV, Spain of Alfonso XIII). In a few instances the regent is portrayed. Here Christine Charlotte, mother of the small child Karl, issued one Taler with her portrait. An outstanding coin and a great rarity.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500.
Ex Irving Goodman Collection.
