German States -- Besançon. Taler, 1661. Dav-5070. Crowned double eagle with arms on breast. Reverse: Charles V standing dividing date. Very pleasing for the technical grade given. NGC graded AU-50.

Besancon is today a part of France, yet for many centuries it was part of the Holy Roman Empire and was officially granted the status of a free imperial city with the right to mint coins, as well as being a Bishopric. It was only after the Treaty of Nijmegen in 1678 that Besancon reverted to France.
