Lot 269

Great Britain. Norman Kings of England. AR Penny, ND (Castle Rising mint, struck c. 1145-1150, the Civil War). North-878; S-1280. 1.33 grams. Stephen, 1135-1154 AD. Voided Cross & Mullets type. Moneyer, Rodbert. Central circle, within a crowned and draped bust three-quarters left and holding scepter in right hand, bust extending to edge of flan; +STIE[F]NE around. Reverse: Central circle, within a cross voided, three pellets terminating each arm, and with a mullet in each angle; +ROD[B]VRT : ON : RIS around. Flatness to the legends quite modest for Stephen's coinage. A charming portrait, remarkably innovative for the period; even more, an extraordinary strike for the series. Handsome, old deep silvery gray to brown toning, with some fine blues in the recesses. Coin basically As Struck, and lustrous. Very rare mint, and equally rare in this quality. NGC graded MS-61.

The Castle Rising mint was located inside the walls of the castle of that name, still standing and located just northeast of present-day King's Lynn, near "The Wash" -- an extremely rare and exotic mint!
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.
Ex Dr Jacob Y. Terner Collection (by private treaty to the Millennia Collection).

Realized $10,925
