Great Britain. Norman Kings of England. AR Penny, ND (Hastings mint, struck 1066-1068). North-839; S-1250. 1.29 grams. William I (the Conqueror), 1066-1087 AD. Cross Fleury type. Moneyer, Duninc. Crowned and draped bust left, scepter at shoulder; +PILLEMVS REX around. Reverse: Central circle, within a cross fleury, pellet in center: +DVNNIC ON ÆSTI around. Superior strike, on a choice, full flan of fine metal (the obverse rim shows one area of softness, opposing reverse details too deeply impressed). Old dark to medium gray toning, generally the recesses lighter with some golden iridescence. Excellent example of type. A wonderful token of English/Norman history, and from its most historic site as well. NGC graded AU-55.
The first type of penny coined for the first Norman king. A rarity from the Hastings mint, struck shortly after the invasion battle, circa 1066-1068.
