Anglo-Saxon England ended abruptly at Battle, near present-day Hastings, when an enemy arrow struck King Harold in the eye, killing him on the field. The resulting Norman Conquest ushered in an entirely new era, dominated by hated Frenchmen descended from earlier Viking invaders. Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000. Ex Dr Jacob Y. Terner Collection (by private treaty to the Millennia Collection). Illustrated in Money of The World, coin 69.
