Lot 218

Great Britain. Kings of All England. AR Penny, ND (Norwich mint). North-675; S-1095. 1.67 grams. Aethelstan, 924-939 AD. Crowned Bust type. Moneyer, Eadgar. Crowned and draped bust right; +ÆÐELSTAN REX around. Reverse: Central circle, small cross pattee within; + EADGAR IGO NORÐP around. An absolutely extraordinary specimen, with a perfectly centered strike on quality metal, the flan full without the slightest hint of a crack or porosity, the edge flawless, the rims high and sharp. Artistic, old deep-gray toning, darker in the recesses, enhances the marvelous eye-appeal of this special coin. Very Rare as a type, but seemingly unique in this condition. There is only the slightest hint of wear, and the cataloguer, who originally purchased this coin for Dr. Terner in the Stack Anglo-Saxon auction held by Sotheby's, and then sold it to the present owner, considers this coin to be both virtually As Struck and possibly a Specimen. Once sold, it will be irreplaceable. NGC graded MS-60.

Among the finest portraits known on Anglo-Saxon pennies! A medallic or presentation strike?
Estimated Value $12,500 - 15,000.
Ex Larry Stack Collection, Sotheby's, London (April 1999), lot 464; ex Hird (241). Ex Dr Jacob Y. Terner Collection (by private treaty to the Millennia Collection).

Realized $35,650
