Great Britain. Kings of Wessex. AR Penny, ND (Northwestern mint, struck c. 880-899). North-649; S-1087. 1.50 grams. Edward the Elder, 899-924 AD. Two-line type. Central circle, small cross pattee within; + EADVVEARD REX around. Reverse: Inscription in two lines: BVRH+ / ELMMO in upper and lower registers, pellets above and below, with three crosses across center. Finely struck on oversize flan, on choice metal. Excellent, even, medium gray toning; some residual luster. Scarce. A splendid example, the finest this cataloguer has ever seen. NGC graded MS-63.
