Great Britain. Kings of Wessex. AR Penny, ND (Canterbury mint, struck c. 880-899). North-635; S-1066. 1.55 Grams. Ælfred the Great, 871-899 AD. Third Coinage; Guthrum type. Central circle, small cross pattee within; +EL FR ED RE around. Reverse: Inscription in two lines: EÐELV / INE M¤ in upper and lower registers, with pellets vertically across center. Excellent strike on choice metal. Artistic, old deep-gray toning, darker in the recesses. Very Scarce, particularly this variety. NGC graded AU-55. Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500. Ex Dr Jacob Y.
