Great Britain. Kings of Mercia. AR Pennyn ND (Canterbury mint, struck c. 784-787). North-261 var.; S-904. 1.27 grams. Offa, 757-796 AD. Light Coinage; Group I. Moneyer "Eoba" is for Heaberht (Sutherland, pp. 9-14). Without portrait. Beaded cross with A or K finials, beaded annulet center with small cross pattee within; OFRM around in angles. Reverse: Celtic cross pattee, with annulet center, small cross within pellet in each angle; EOBA around in angles. Crisply struck, on choice metal. Some residual mint luster. Medium to dark toning, Mostly a warm brown color, reflecting occasional pinks. Extremely Rare. NGC graded MS-61.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 6,000.
Thought to be from the Rome Hoard of 1830. Ex Dr Jacob Y. Terner Collection (by private treaty to the Millennia Collection).
