Great Britain. Kings of Northumbria. AR Sceat, ND. North-177; S-847. 1.03 grams. Eadberht, 737-758 AD. Small cross at center, EAdberhTvr around. Reverse: Fantastic animal right, with long tail and raised foreleg. Good strike on fine metal. Attractive even toning. This denomination was also sometimes called a denarius, and in fact it was the earliest type of penny. Eadberht was the brother of Ecgbehrt. Rare, and a perfect illustration of this classic, early Anglo-Saxon design. NGC graded AU-55.
